Sleeping with Airpods: Is it Safe?

Sleeping with Airpods: Is it Safe?

Last Updated on by admin

Sleeping is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it in a way that will protect you from the dangers. One such danger is the fact that your brain could overheat during sleep if you wear something like headphones or earbuds for too long. Worried about waking up with a headache after a long night of listening to your favorite tunes? You may need to give the Airpods a break.

As it turns out, Apple’s wireless headphones aren’t really ideal for sleeping. In fact, they’re downright dangerous.

For your brain to function properly while you sleep, temperatures in the brain must remain within a fairly narrow range. A study even found that the brain’s temperature can drop as much as 9 degrees Fahrenheit within the first hour of sleep if you listen to music or use headphones.

Worst of all, and unlike some other fashion items, you can’t simply pull your Airpods out of your ears when you need to go to bed, as you could with your cheap pair of earbuds. As such, don’t put anything in your ears unless you want to wake up with a throbbing headache in the morning.

Despite these risks, some people can’t be persuaded that sleeping with earbuds in is a bad idea. In fact, a whole list of artists and musicians claim to sleep with headphones in every night. While they are very passionate about their art and craft, they had no problem giving up the practice when offered double their normal rate just to remove the headphones.

The most common point of contention is heat buildup. When your ears get warm, it can be incredibly uncomfortable. It can even cause serious damage to your ears over time.

An even bigger issue is the fact that headphones block out a lot of sound. While this may be great while you are listening to music or watching a movie, it’s not so great when you actually need to hear something going on around you. This could mean missing someone trying to wake you up, or failing to hear a coworker approaching from behind.

It’s important to note that the AirPods are not harmful if you are using them for a limited amount of time. If you’re using them for too long, however, “the heat inside the inner ear could cause long-lasting damage, which might lead to hearing loss and tinnitus.”

Risks of sleeping with airpods

Cancer and radiation

A lot of individuals believe that the use of Airpods over a long period of time can pose the risk of cancer and radiation due to the use of bluetooth radiation that the airpod uses to communicate with ipads and iphones.

Though research haven’t proven this to be true, but if you are the type that uses airpods when sleeping, you should consider this as a possible risk factor.

With that said it is advisable not to use airpods for a long period of time during the day or at night before sleeping.

Risk of hearing loss

Listening to music on headphones can cause tinnitus, a ringing in the ears, and hearing loss. The radiation could interfere with melatonin and serotonin production during sleep which would result as insomnia. Regular use of wireless earbuds has three times more radiation than wired headphones. High intensity levels of sound waves can cause a significant loss of amplitude in both ears over time.

Risk of burns

The high temperatures can lead to burns on the ear drum by causing a great deal of friction in the ear canal with the Airpods. The inner ear has the ability to regulate the temperature in the brain by blood flow, but if they’re blocked, then this doesn’t happen and it could lead to severe heat issue, which may lead to a headache or a stroke.

Risk of serious damage to the ear

In case the earpods are not removed after using them in bed, then that would be putting a lot of pressure on the eardrum. There will be not enough oxygen reaching to the ears causing infections and hearing loss.

Risk of tinnitus

Tinnitus is a ringing in the ears, which usually originates in the ear lobes and then radiates outwards. The high pressure inside the ear can cause this condition which will affect the ears and the brain.

Though some individuals don’t believe that it is dangerous to sleep with airpods in, and for such individuals we have to give them best practices for sleeping with airpods if they can’t do away with it.

Best practices for sleeping with AirPods

Ensure the volume is Low

Though most people believe that listening to music enables them to easily sleep when they have difficulty in sleeping, but having a high volume can pose great threat and this can hinder the real essence of sleeping which is to relax the brain.

Sleep on your back

When you sleep on your back there is a tendency for the airpod to fall off, but this is also good in the sense that it prevents you from sleeping on the airpod which could cause pain to your ears.

Do not use Airpods When taking a nap

Though its similar to sleep but during the day and also at a short time frame, having your airpods in during a nap isn’t cool as it will hinder the natural process of giving your brain and body the needed rest.

Get a soft pillow

Getting a soft pillow is important here for side sleepers as it saves you from pains that occur when you rest your ears directly on the pillow with the airpods in.

Conclusion

So, how comfortable are the Apple Airpods? In a word—very. The fit is snug and the weight is minimal. They will not slip out of your ears and remain comfortable throughout the day—even when doing lots of active things like biking, running, or working out.
